Know Your Game!

Marketing, branding, and advertising is like anything else – you need to know where you want to go – and how to get there.

Here’s a simple example of the philosophy of “where you want to go – and how to get there.” A friend of mine called, and said that her home computer printer would only print in black. I recommended that she check the ink cartridges – she did – everything seemed to be in place. I then recommended that she go to the computer, and check the printer print box. She said that she didn’t know how to do that – and would I have time to come over, and look into the matter. I said that I would.

When I arrived she was on the phone arguing with a representative from the printing cartridge manufacturer. She was saying that the color ink cartridge that she received was defective, and that she wanted a new one sent to her – “immediately.” The representative kept telling her to go to the printer, and make sure that it wasn’t set to print only in black – she refused to do that.

While they were arguing I went to the computer, and selected “print in color.” The printer then printed in color – she hung up the phone! Basic rule: you need to know where you want to go – and how to get there. It’s the same with marketing, branding, or advertising your company – if you don’t know how to do it  – check with a professional that does.

Nate, your article says it all. As I’ve mentioned on here before, business tends to begin or start up with no plans for marketing or advertising. It should be at the top of any owner’s agenda. If people don’t know about your company, then they are unlikely to use it, it’s just that simple!
